News and Events Life Line Screening 5/15/2017 9:17:32 AM
Hello First Presbyterian and any friends who may be interested in preventive measures related to heart health! Please read this notice about Life Line Screening and mark your calendars for June 30th.

Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will offer their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings at First Presbyterian Church on 6/30/2017. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heartbeat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 dollar discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit or text the word circle to 797979.

]]> Youth Rally! 9/7/2016 11:32:28 AM On September 25th, the Presbytery of Western NC will be holding a Youth Rally for middle and high school-aged youth at Montreat. The event will have a keynote speaker, a time for recreation, and a time for worship, and I think it will be a great experience for our youth. We'll be meeting from 2:50-6:15 in Upper Anderson at Montreat. There's no registration and no cost, but please let me know if you'll be attending so that we have an idea of how big our group will be. Parents can join if they like as chaperones or simply to tag along!

]]> Cookies on 9/11 9/7/2016 11:24:31 AM This Sunday the children and youth will be delivering cookies to emergency services workers throughout Marion in memory of September 11th.Our first responder teams do a lot for the safety of this country, and we rarely take the opportunity to thank them for their service, or to acknowledge the danger that they put themselves in. So it’s nice, once a year, to do something to honor those people, even if it is as simple a thing as making and delivering cookies. So if you like to bake, or if you want a fun activity to do with your family, now’s your chance! Make cookies and bring them to church on Sunday, and the youth will deliver them at about 4:00 in the afternoon.

]]> Safe Sanctuary Policy 2/9/2016 11:13:21 AM At last month's session meeting the church adopted a Safe Place Policy, known commonly in the church world as Safe Sanctuary Policy. This document outlines the church's responsibility to our young people, and offers guidelines for the protection of children and youth while at church events. Every church needs to have a policy like this in place, and we are glad to announce that you can peruse through the church's official Safe Sanctuary Policy on our website here.]]>

]]> Souper Bowl Service Blitz 2/2/2016 11:43:16 AM The day before the Super Bowl football game, Saturday February 6th, youth from around the country wil be serving in their communities as part of the Souper Bowl Service Blitz. Our youth will serve at McDowell Mission Ministries, organizing closets, storage rooms, and storage sheds to make life run more smoothly for the staff and residents of the Women's and Children's Home. This service project will be from 9:30-1:30, and we'll need some help to complete all of the projects. This is a great chance to do hands on work and interact with some of the people in our community who need help.]]>
]]> Souper Bowl of Caring 2/2/2016 10:56:07 AM Souper Bowl of Caring started in 1990, when 22 youth groups in Columbia, SC stood outside their churches after worship holding soup pots to collect money and canned goods. Each youth group gave 100 percent of their collections directly to charities and non-profits in their community. Over the next several years this grassroots movement grew until thousands of groups from every state were collecting a total of several million dollars every year.

This year, the youth of First Presbyterian will be collecting money and canned goods after worship next Sunday, on February 7th. Everything that we raise will be donated to McDowell Mission Ministries, where it will be used to help those in need. Be sure to bring a few dollars or non-perishable food items to worship on Sunday so that you can be part of the Souper Bowl of Caring collection!

At 6:00 we will have a Soup and Chili Cook Off in the Fellowship hall, for which everyone is invited to bring their best soup or chili. The Jr and Sr High youth will be serving us all at this dinner to raise money for Project Christmas, and everyone is encouraged to donate $5 to sample the soups and for a chance to vote on their favorite.
